The Georgia Vascular Society 6th Annual Scientific Sessions were held September 14-16, 2018, at the Ritz-Carlton Reynolds, Lake Oconee, in Greensboro, Georgia. Guest Speakers Mohammed M. Moursi, MD, FACS from the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences; Bruce A. Perler, MD, FACS from John Hopkins University; and Paul A. Armstrong, DO, FACS from the University of South Florida and Florida Vascular Society President. Dr. Armstrong replaced scheduled guest speaker Cynthia K. Shortell, MD, FACS from Duke University as she prepared for the arrival of Hurricane Florence.
This year's meeting kicked off with the Presidential Address with an introduction by President-Elect Daniel McDevitt, MD which contained lots of photos and fun facts about Dr. Sailors. After his address, David Sailors, MD was presented a plaque in appreciation of his service.
After our guest speaker presentations, five residents and fellows competed for the 2018 Robert B. Smith, III, MD Resident Award. This year's winner was resident Richard A. Meena, MD from Emory University School of Medicine for his presentation entitled Surveillance Recommendations Following TEVAR Should be Based on Initial Indication for Repair. The award was presented by Moderator William D. Jordan, Jr, MD.
The Georgia Vascular Foundation awarded three medical student scholarships this year. The recipients were: Matthew J. Aizpuru from Emory University School of Medicine, Caroline G. Smith from Piedmont Heart Institute and Sabina Sorondo from Medical College of Georgia - Athens. Both Matthew and Caroline also gave a presentation during the conference.
The Saturday afternoon activities included the very popular Sporting Clays tournament held at the new Sandy Creek Sporting Grounds. Overall high winner was Tyler Urrutia who showed his dad, Kevin Urrutia, from Gore & Associates, how it's done! Tyler's name will be added to the perpetual trophy. The first place team included: Tyler Urrutia, Kevin Urrutia, Mohammed Moursi, MD, Anthony Avino, MD and Mini Schulte from ProCare Prosthetics & Orthotics.
After the Bulldogs beat Middle Tennessee 49-7, David Sailors, MD hosted the President's Tailgate Party. Decorations by his wife, Katy, and daughter, Kelsey, made the brand new Pavilion look amazing. Lots of great food and football added to a fun-filled evening.
